We had gotten a month out, booked flights and done a lot of rehearsal for a new show that was part-concept, part musical doomscroll; and we were very proud of it. ‘Homeless’ had been very well received and we wanted to play the whole thing, in sequence, in a slightly extended form to show it off to our audiences.

Now, as we all know - things didn't exactly go according to plan. And for the next 9 months, the nearest we got to playing live was the ‘Home from Home’ video we made.

In a break between the initial covid wave and the devastating second wave that locked us all up for nearly a quarter of a year, we managed to fit in two socially distanced shows in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. The town in question, Katoomba, had been pretty heavily impacted by the bushfires we'd had only a little over a year earlier.

We recorded the whole show, and this is it. The live record of the Anubis tour that never was.

We had a great time and it was nice to remind ourselves of what it felt like to be a real band - if only temporarily.

Now the cat's out the bag and we're on our way back to see as many of our friends as we can, it seemed like a good idea to release this album to remind you of what Anubis sounds like on stage. And how ‘Homeless’ sounded when it hit the stage. With new music not too far away, this album was a weird moment in time that deserved to be captured. And, if we dare say so ourselves; captures Anubis sounding better live than it ever had before?

Disc One

Reflective/Entitled/White Ashes/Home/Homeless/The Tables have Turned/Sirens/In Shadows/Gone

Disc Two

Fool's Gold/Tightening of the Screws/Technicolour Afterlife/The Collapse/Silent Wandering Ghosts

Released October 31st, 2023.

Pre-order the album

Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/69377822022-04-01T22:57:34+11:002023-12-11T06:50:38+11:00230503 Deluxe Anniversary Edition - coming 230522

After many years of being unavailable to buy standalone on CD, Anubis is set to release a brand new remix of the band's celebrated 2009 debut CD.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, the band was busy updating the 230503 album to match up to the sonic standard of the band's later work. In order to achieve this aim, all of Steven Eaton's original drum tracks have been faithfully re-recorded and the album was re-mixed and mastered with best quality modern day and vintage equipment.

On top of this, an additional CD of music has been produced featuring two lost chapters of the 230503 story, the 'lost' opening epic 'The Life not Taken', clocking in at over 20 minutes; and the album's original intended closing track, 'Technicolour Afterlife'. Also included are live performances from both Australia and overseas between 2010 and 2018.

The set is packaged in a 2CD media book designed by the band's long term art director Tim Neill, and features sleeve notes by the band, unseen photographs and lost artwork by Matthew Buttsworth that was omitted from the original 230503 CD in 2009.

CD 1

230503 (2020 Mix)

The Deepest Wound

Leaving Here Tonight

Breaking Water

Waterfall

Anonymity

The Bond of Mutual Distrust

The Doctor

Flying/Falling

The Collapse

Disinfected and Abused

CD2

The Life not Taken (2020 Recording)

i.
Of course the delay has been caused by difficulties in obtaining the printed sleeves due to the coronavirus. The scale of this issue and it's disruption to supply chains and logistics could not be foreseen, though we do offer our most sincere apologies to everyone waiting for their order.

At this stage our best guess is that we will be able to ship all vinyl orders somewhere around early to mid-April. We know we've been here before, and we're sorry for the second delay. We want to be clear, this estimate is our best guess based on the information we have right now, though the situation may change as the COVID19 issue and it's impacts progresses.

If there is anyone who has any issues, please feel free to email us at anubis@anubismusic.com

In the meantime, please stay healthy, and remember to be kind to each other.

Thanks to Henri and all the guys from Background Magazine
Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/53894272018-08-16T13:02:10+10:002023-12-07T18:34:24+11:00Night of the Prog
It's been just over a month now since we performed at this year's Night of the Prog. I'm still not sure that we've gotten over it. It was an experience that far exceeded our expectations.

The audience response was completely mind blowing. We were so happy to see so many people singing along, and even those who hadn't heard us before gave us a warm welcome to "The Rock". We'll not forget that experience in a hurry - Thank you to everyone who attended.

We were also so very happy to see so many faces that we'd seen earlier on the tour, but also caught up with many people who we'd met on our first European tour in 2015. It was just fantastic to see you all again. We appreciate every bit of all of your continued support. We'll try as best as we can to make it back there before another three years gets away.

A big thanks to Win and all his team at WiV Entertainment for having us along at NotP, and also to all of the stage, lighting and sound guys from Session Pro. Each and every one of you were so helpful and welcoming.

Hope to see you all again soon.

Our first trip to France was so much more than we'd hoped for, with such a wonderful reception from the audience there. It was also great to have the Morganatics along for the ride to support us. A really great band, and a lovely bunch of people as well. Really hope we can cross paths with them again in the future.
Press Release: Rebuilding the Tower at T’Blok

Australian Prog-Rock group Anubis - who tour Europe in July in support of their new studio LP ‘The Second Hand’ are to perform a very special exclusive show at T’Blok in Nieuwerkerk on July 8th 2018.

For the first time since 2012, and the first time ever outside of Australia, the band will perform 2011’s ‘A Tower of Silence’ album in it’s entirety.

“The ‘A Tower of Silence’ album has a strong connection with our European fans - but especially in the Netherlands” says keyboardist David Eaton. “It was voted onto the ‘De Wereldse Tein Progressive chart back in 2011, two band members were awarded in for our performances on it, it received wonderful reviews in Background, DPRP, iO Pages, Progwereld, and also lit up Progarchives where it still sits amongst the top ten Neo-Prog releases of all time. When we played at De Boerderij in 2015, we were given a very warm welcome, and ProgFrog booked us for 2018 before anyone else did. This is our thank you to the Netherlands.”

The concert will also feature music from the band’s new album, ‘The Second Hand’ as well as other stage favourites. Each show on the European tour will have a different setlist, culminating in an appearance at Night of the Prog festival, in Loreley, Germany on July 15th 2018.
Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/50705562018-02-09T20:29:13+11:002023-12-11T04:10:11+11:00News roundup - Feb 2018
Hi Everyone,

Sorry it's been a while between updates - we've been busy preparing live material for the tour later this year, and also working on a new release.

That's right, there's going to be a new release in the first quarter of this year. I promise we'll get you some details very soon.

Also, speaking of preparing live material, don't forget that we have a Sydney show coming up in a couple of weeks at the Bald Faced Stag in Leichardt. There'll be bands on both the main stage and the front bar that night so it should be a really great night with heaps of music to enjoy.

Tickets are $15 and will be available at the venue.

While we're on the subject of tickets - We've been asked about when tickets will be on sale for our show at the Boston Music Room in London, and at this stage we're still not sure. As soon as we have the details though, we'll let you know right here as well as adding a link to the gig listing elsewhere on the site.

For the other gigs on the tour you can get your tickets HERE for the show at T'Blok in the Netherlands, and HERE for the Night of the Prog festival at Loreley, Germany. We'll also have some very good news for our friends in France shortly - watch this space.

Lastly, we stumbled on this review of the Second Hand this week,

We'd like to thank Notes Reviews for such a positive review, and thanks for spreading the word.

Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/50226422018-01-14T13:37:29+11:002022-05-24T14:45:25+10:00Happy 2018!
A very happy year to you all!!

2018 promises to be a very good year in Anubis' world with a European tour in July culminating in a performance at the Night of the Prog festival on July 15th.

There's also set to be at least one new release from the band early this year - but more on that down the track a bit.

To kick off the year though, we're set to preform an all too rare home town show at the Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Leichardt, Sydney on February 23rd. The show will also feature Anton's old band Carmeria amongst a great bunch of other prog and prog-metal bands, so we're all looking forward to that.

Hope to see you all soon.
Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/49804962017-12-16T21:13:35+11:002021-08-10T16:33:50+10:00Interviews with Rob and Dean
Progstravaganza have just published an interview with Rob about recording "The Second Hand", following "Hitchhiking" and also touched on his garage-punk musical beginnings.

To give some of the new listeners out there a chance to sample some of our earlier material, and to give our long-time listeners a chance to have a bit more insight into the material, we're producing a series of podcasts featuring each of our albums and we need your help.

We'd like to know what it is that you want to know about anything to do with our previous albums, or even the current one.

If you'd like to know about the concept behind "A Tower of Silence", or what the lyrics to "Disinfected and Abused" mean, or if you'd like to know what keyboards Dave used on "The Passing Bell" or how the music for "A Room with a View" was written then now is your chance to ask.

We'd also love to hear about your experiences with the music. What songs are your favourites? What songs are the ones that resonated with you first? Which ones are the ones that resonate with you now? Are there any moments in your lives that are connected to a song or an album, or is there simply a lyric, a guitar solo or a bass part that you really love? We'd love to hear about that too.

If there's anything at all you'd like to share or have us answer, either comment here on our website or on our facebook page, or you can shoot us an email at anubis@anubismusic.com

We're looking forward to hearing from you.
Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/47409572017-06-11T13:16:14+10:002022-03-16T22:46:39+11:00Missing CD's...
We're very sorry that a few people have gotten in touch with us recently to let us know that their pre-ordered CD's still haven't arrived.

While we made every effort to send out all of the pre-orders so that they would arrive at their destination on or shortly after the release date, unfortunately international postage leaves so much out of our control that there are still a few of you who haven't received your orders. We sincerely apologise if this is you.

Please be aware that some international postage destinations (particularly eastern Europe and the west coast of the USA) seem to be taking much longer than expected, up to 5 or 6 weeks.

Recently Anubis has made the decision to leave the Bird's Robe Records label, and begin representing ourselves independent of any label. This is NOT due to any problem with Bird's Robe, in fact we still have a good relationship with Mike at Bird's Robe, and are friends and fans of many of the bands still remaining on the label. We simply felt that the current interests and trajectory of the band was best served by a more independent approach.

This has meant though, that we've had to withdraw our catalogue from Bird's Robe and their digital distribution partners, and move the catalogue to our new distributors, who will have our catalogue back up and available on Spotify very soon.

This issue will also affect the availability of our albums on the iTunes Store as well as a few other digital outlets, but as with Spotify, this will only be temporary.

For some of you who have purchased our music on the iTunes Store, and have not stored the files locally, this may mean that you will lose your copies of our albums.
Thanks for sticking with us through our relative silence these past few months. As you know, we've been busy putting together our fourth studio album, 'The Second Hand', and we're delighted to say we're now ready to hand over to you guys. It's available to pre-order and we'll be releasing it worldwide on 23rd May 2017.

'The Second Hand' takes us back into '230503'/'A Tower of Silence' territory in the sense that it's a cinematic concept record, it has a story, the songs play like scenes from a film and has a vibe and atmosphere that runs throughout it.

It also channels the personal and emotional side we explored in ''Hitchhiking to Byzantium' in the lyrics, which after the events of 2016 have taken on a very dark tone. We do indeed live in a scary world, and this is our way of trying to make some sense of it.

The old news media, print and television, have moved to so far toward sensationalism in such an overt way in the last few years that it's almost like a terrifying reality TV show that none of us can seemingly ignore or look away from. All the time, a small number of powerful people are living like kings while the majority of the world slide endlessly toward poverty. Good people, bruised and battered, get angry, scared and with the open wound agitated by the media, look for answers from anybody who can promise them a way out.

'The Second Hand' finds an ageing media mogul, James Osbourne-Fox, who after nearly 50 years at the top, suffers a traumatic injury and is paralysed in hospital. In this state of limbo, conscious but unable to communicate, he replays his life of greed and gain. Can he find the true meaning and essence of life? The album explores the humanity in even the very worst of people. What's actually behind all the hate, bigotry and crassness? What will it take for mankind to put aside all the darkness and find a way to be better people who can empathise with each other?

We truly hope that 'The Second Hand' touches you. All we can say is that we've worked very hard, we're very proud of it, that Tim's cover is absolutely stunning, and that we're really, really looking forward to playing it to as many of you as possible over the next couple of years.

Pre-orders are available now from https://anubismusic.bandcamp.com. Pre-order now and you'll get downloads of "Fool's Gold" and "The Making of Me" from the new album.

Thanks for staying aboard. Roll on 230517!

Much Love,

Robbie, Dave, Dougie, Dean, Anton and Steve

Three years on from the release of ‘Hitchhiking to Byzantium’, we are proud to release the first track from our upcoming fourth studio album, ‘The Second Hand’ which is due out in May.

This will be our first studio album to feature the current line-up. It is a return to the plot-driven cinematic concept album in the style of ‘A Tower of Silence’ and ‘230503’.

One thing is certain; it seems even more relevant today than it did when it was written over 12 months ago.

Recently, producer Sir George Martin sadly joined this list.
Martin's contribution to the art of record production is well documented, and of course Anubis owes him an enormous debt, as does every band or artist who has entered a recording studio. He helped turn the long playing album format into an art form, and Anubis would like to join the long list of those who'd like to say thanks and goodbye.

#4 Sessions Continue
Work is still in progress for Anubis' fourth studio album. The band are all very, very pleased with the progress but there is still much work to be done, and we're still being tight-lipped about any release schedule. We're sorry for the long wait, but we think this one will be worth the wait.
What we can say though, is that next week Dave will be traveling to Melbourne where he has booked studio sessions with a genuine Mellotron. This will add to the already long list of vintage keyboards Dave has used on the sessions.

The Big Rig Mk II
For those of you who have been following the series of Gear Corner posts, Dean has just completed a full revision and update of his rig. There'll be a post detailing the new rig soon, but here's a quick preview....

New Music From One Of Our Friends
Our good friend (and fellow Australian Prog artist) Ben Craven has just released his new album "Last Chance to Hear".
If you haven't heard Ben's music, head on over to http://bencraven.com and see what you're missing.Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/40409012016-02-14T20:34:01+11:002017-01-17T01:15:36+11:00More photos from the studioAnubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/39696842016-01-04T13:08:47+11:002021-08-26T19:27:06+10:00Best of 2015We're very happy to pass on the news that Anubis' live album, "Behind Our Eyes" has been awarded the Best Live Album for 2015 by Internet Radio Show "Music in Widescreen".

We'd like to thank everyone at Music in Widescreen for the award, and for supporting Anubis' music in general.

If you'd like to listen to Music in Widescreen, head on over to
http://www.musicinwidescreen.com/progrock-com/
Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/39680002015-12-28T07:47:57+11:002023-12-11T03:48:02+11:00Seasons GreetingsIt's been a fantastic year in the Anubis camp with the release of our first live album, our first international tour, and the beginnings of a fourth studio album.
While so many artists are shackled to their labels and drained of creative freedom, we've always been encouraged to go wherever we wanted, and BRR have taken the leap with us.

For the last five years we have been honoured to tour with, hang with and be mentioned alongside artists, composers and musicians that are, for my money, the finest that Australia has to offer. The Bird's Robe Collective has always felt like a family, right from the day we were invited to join back in 2009, and it still does now, despite the weight it now carries. I believe that at the core, despite the huge diversity that exists within the progressive/post/art music world, we are all united by the ethos of doing it for the music and the love of creativity.

So the question is, what's next for Anubis?

Firstly, Doug is hard at work polishing up some recordings from the recent European tour. Each show of the tour was recorded, (though not as a multitrack) and we're planning to release as much of it as possible as an "official bootleg". It shouldn't take too long for this to be ready, but we'll keep you posted right here as soon as the full details are known.

Secondly, (and speaking of bootlegs) Dean has been working on compiling the first of a planned series of bootleg recordings. The idea behind this series is to present companion pieces to the studio albums. These will likely consist of early demos of songs from the studio albums, live recordings and other unused material. The first of this series is to consist mostly of demo material from the "Tower of Silence" album. Again, we'll keep you posted here with more details closer to the release.

Thirdly, and most excitingly, work has begun on new material intended to become the band's fourth studio album. Of course it's way too early at this stage to give away too much information, and there's no point even talking about a timeline right now. The band are still demoing ideas and discussing concepts so it will still be quite a way off, but we'll hopefully be able to give you a look at the process of making the album somewhere along the way.

Stay tuned.........
Anubistag:anubismusic.com,2005:Post/37644472015-07-03T20:11:27+10:002024-01-11T17:04:45+11:00Remembering Chris Squire

Chris Squire -
We simply wouldn't have existed without him.

In 2003, when Rob and I were starting to find musical common ground, I lent him my CD copy of Yes' Relayer. Up until then, he'd been a young bass player in a punk band for whom the Mars Volta had left the door ajar to more complex music. Within 6 months of hearing 'Relayer', Anubis was a thing and Robert had spent hours and hours studying Squire's playing and sound. And even bought a Rickenbacker to get him slightly closer to that sound.

That influence of Chris Squire is all over 230503 and HtB upon which Robert played bass. When Nick Antoinette joined us, he was already a fan of Yes and knew exactly what he was signing up for. And as such Chris' influence is all over 'A Tower of Silence' too. And when people say nice things about the bass parts in Anubis' songs, it's got a lot to do with our appreciation for the brilliance of Chris Squire.

Not many musicians are that singular in their field. There are many other bass players who are probably more technical, many who are even more upfront in the mix.

But there are far fewer that I know of that had such an instinctive knowledge of harmony and counterpoint, allied to a original, elegant and phenomenally powerful style and sound, further allied to terrifyingly fast fingers (on a Rickenbacker, no less) and a cavalier attitude. He made it not only OK to play bass with a pick, he made it sound better than just about everyone else. The power of Entwhistle and the melodicism of McCartney. He was a product of his time that managed to transcend time.

In his heyday, there really was nobody like him. Nearly half a century later, there are people who play music that pays an obvious homage to that trailblazing work. But there really is still nobody like him.

- David Eaton

"I can honestly say that I've never had a gig experience like the one we've just had. The setting was stunning, the sound crystal clear and superb, the bands were brilliant and the audience were something else entirely.

I can probably speak for the other bands at Prog the Castle, and I can definitely speak for the guys in Anubis when I say that the audience at Prog the Castle was the best we've ever played to. I've never felt so much warmth, enthusiasm and joy from an audience, it's a feeling I won't forget easily.

"A beautiful, enchanting space that seemed a perfect backdrop to Anubis' first show outside of Australia.

Stepping out onto the stage at midnight, the band was welcomed with a wave of love and warmth never before experienced, as people who had lived their lives to the soundtrack of our music finally got to hear us play it for them in person.

I can't express the feeling in words, as all of our most powerful musical moments, some perhaps less suited to Australian stages, were dispatched with enthusiasm and a renewed vigor, despite our relative jetlag.

Songs from all three albums seamlessly combining into set that best represented the most grandiose and epic side of Anubis.

I am proud of the music we created, proud of my bandmates, and hugely proud of the legacy we have and most of all, I'm massively proud of the memories we created for ourselves and for our fans.

I will leave a piece of my heart in Heidelberg forever.
Recorded live throughout 2013 and 2014.
Multitrack recording engineered and mixed by Dean Bennison
Mastered by Douglas Skene.

Cover art by Tim Neill

Linear notes:

2014 was our tenth year as a group, and it turned out to be an exciting year for the band as we released Hitchhiking to Byzantium and headed out for the first time with the new lineup, with Anton making his presence very much felt. Shows ranged from a packed out Metro Theatre in Sydney playing to some 1200 people to an intimate club show in our adopted hometown in front of 100 people, most of whom we probably knew by name. All the shows shared the same powerful atmosphere and although the setlist rotated practically every night, each show drew material from all three studio albums with the newer material from Hitchhiking more than holding it's own against the older material in the set.

It's has long been a feature of Anubis' shows to sequence the set together with linking sound effects and sections to strengthen and maintain the atmosphere and this album captures the effect much as it was performed.

'Behind Our Eyes' strikes a balance between the mainstays of the 2013/2014 set, as well as a clutch of rarely performed pieces, and the inclusion of 'The Doctor', being amongst the very first pieces that Robert and I ever wrote together for the 230503 album, feels particularly apropos.

2014 was, indeed, a very good year for Anubis.

David Eaton, February 2015.

We've been announced as one of the support acts for British rock legends URIAH HEEP on the Sydney leg of their 2015 Australian tour, playing the Metro Theatre on Friday March 20th 2015.

Heep have been a mainstay on the international touring circuit since 1970, and are responsible for millions of album sales, critical acclaim and influencing countless bands in their wake, not least of all us. They've been one of David's favourite bands for as long as he can care to remember and a big element of the keyboard sound and the vocal harmony arrangements of Anubis owes a huge debt to Heep.

Undeterred by the seismic musical shifts of punk, the 1980's, grunge and electronic music, Heep have stuck to what they do best and are still out there, and are still one of the only veteran groups who can match their heyday in terms of providing an energetic and musically precise and demanding set.

By happy coincidence, Hemina are supporting them at Rooty Hill the night before.
